I am finally able to announce that I am the lucky recipient of the 2012 Times/Canon Young Photographer of the Year Award and began working for the Times as a contract photographer today.
The above image was part of my application process which required me to shoot a national news story from the week leading up to my interview.
The image is of Judy Wilcox, a horticulturalist from Greatworth Fields in Northamptonshire, and her Basset Hound puppy, taken in a warehouse that houses trees and plants cultivated by her and her husband. Access to their property and business will be completely cut-off by the governments planned high-speed railway, High Speed 2, and with no alternative means of approach planned they may be forced to relocate.
This and a contact sheet from the days work, covering events outside the High Court in London where a major legal battle began and other individuals due to be affected was presented at interview alongside a portfolio of work from Egypt and Israel.
